This six kilometer stretch of sea beach is the most recent beach to be discovered by the tourists and hoteliers alike which means that there are plenty of hotels but the infrastructure is poor, including an absence of electricity which means that the resorts and hotels have to run on genset. Alokesh Gupta catalysed this meet and co-ordinated with everybody and even set up a yahoo group through which we communicated during planning stage of the DXpedition. Last time we had a series of such expeditions by former members of Indian DX Club International in the 1983-85 during the then period of low sunspot. This DXpedition, planned unfortunately for the peak holiday period of 25th and 26th January 2009 brought together a mix of old timers and recent entrants. Sudipto Ghose, Tripti Ranjan Basu, Babul Gupta and I would better be called old timers because we all of us had the first QSL in the early seventies and were part of the then active Indian DX Club International. Alokesh Gupta who had his first QSL in mid eighties and Swopan<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuPqho25a57fPsPhMeetqZFnUbHlZWQbBL3q33JBSPCfhvAfqA9Xl2yh9KCvRYMgZvnnCr0KZFsQG-yaqKrn9aQFwEPjCwES7iO4OlkPRK39gaQYaY1h0Hi6_1hrkQRb2QK1XwoM2mFfg/s1600-h/mm4.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300707605691872546" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 109px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuPqho25a57fPsPhMeetqZFnUbHlZWQbBL3q33JBSPCfhvAfqA9Xl2yh9KCvRYMgZvnnCr0KZFsQG-yaqKrn9aQFwEPjCwES7iO4OlkPRK39gaQYaY1h0Hi6_1hrkQRb2QK1XwoM2mFfg/s320/mm4.jpg" border="0" /></a> Chakraborty who first QSLed in the early nineties are both more recent entrants to the hobby. They both are very active in the current radio DX scene at a time when internet and the digital world is very much a part of DXing.</span></p><p align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;"><strong>First Day</strong></span></p><p align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;">It was 3 pm when the six of us reached this popular beach 180 km away from Kolkata after negotiating a highway holiday traffic jam through a drive which took us eight hours ! I was the one who had drawn this group here after I was stunned by quality of DX signals of this place in my earlier visit. But there was a big initial disappointment in store for us because of the mad holiday rush I just could not get foothold in any of my preferred hotels. We had to settle for a brand new resort build precariously by the sea. The resort staff was expecting a group of radio buffs and they were ready to help us. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqAUqrqpZUri__kIk1s32WlA2z2f7GkdW7xon45miPc6tC_rqXkCSceg4_lFHL2mC1thJRsVhy3D1XrBbtob1iLdjgLoTAEamC8lG7Kuzed7PHgBcFxt_ToYq506FzpAh9yto3pNc3G28/s1600-h/mm49.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300708626626444322" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqAUqrqpZUri__kIk1s32WlA2z2f7GkdW7xon45miPc6tC_rqXkCSceg4_lFHL2mC1thJRsVhy3D1XrBbtob1iLdjgLoTAEamC8lG7Kuzed7PHgBcFxt_ToYq506FzpAh9yto3pNc3G28/s200/mm49.jpg" border="0" /></a>But there was simply no room to string beverages because we were bang on the sea beach! Never say die ! We soon found that we could string modest 100 m antennas through fields and bushes behind the hotel on North - North east (enameled copper wire) and West - North West (galvanized iron wire) directions. One of two of our rooms was set up as a shack with assorted receivers, laptops, tuners and splitters arranged on the tables in one corner. </span></p><p align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;">This is first time we used GI wire beverages after reading some reports on the web that there was not much difference between GI & copper wires. By the time we finished setting up the antenna through the setting dusk at 5.30 pm, I was beginning to wonder if it had made any sense to call in people from as far away as Delhi and for a meet to coincide with the 25th anniversary of our legendary Chandipore DXpedition of 1983. But Alokesh, the most active amongst us greeted us in the room with beam because he was already receiving AFN Diego Garcia on 12759 kHz USB at 444 signal levels through the whip antnenna of the modest Degen portable. That was the proverbial <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDZZSWe6jqupgZSFL9d4sO-Qn7L2xf_kQPRMThUmqTKo3tKlZubUMZovlegpi6_-SGzl76Suo3gHua45FUJiIByBXtphNVP8cf6OsSHrt5gY8zAfmjThlVVqayDSjiNEfNPUltt006qjg/s1600-h/mm50.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300709416327310002" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 250px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 106px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDZZSWe6jqupgZSFL9d4sO-Qn7L2xf_kQPRMThUmqTKo3tKlZubUMZovlegpi6_-SGzl76Suo3gHua45FUJiIByBXtphNVP8cf6OsSHrt5gY8zAfmjThlVVqayDSjiNEfNPUltt006qjg/s320/mm50.jpg" border="0" /></a>“morning shows the day”. With the receivers connected to the antenna we started checking the bands. I began to feel relieved because you could sense the throbbing signals in the band. At 1200 UTC New Zealnd was loud trying to match Myanmar 594 and Taunggyi 5770. As we were settling down from the exhaustion of the drive and antenna stringing , the South East Asian stations began to sign off. Through early evening scanning till 1600 UTC we realized that the southern AIR stations were coming through : Vijaywada, Bangalore, Thrissur were moderate to strong. From 1800 UTC the MW band was filled with Middle East, with Damman and Qatar prominently standing out. The Iranians were not to be missed too. Tropical band African Safari started at 1800 hrs UTC with Chad coming loud and clear besides <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5dUHgpRFIH7jGappCfV5SGOVYYTVQA90iSDzle8v5xBLfj9x9OxJ8nWKU9mEy23uQSumkKAmZpg1CCGYnloZGeU0ma8uw5zsTiWyP8wB7M9Ezae4mjopvJ2j1lptKgRsjtRE8kM7W_GM/s1600-h/mm51.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300724174436004722" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 109px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 114px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5dUHgpRFIH7jGappCfV5SGOVYYTVQA90iSDzle8v5xBLfj9x9OxJ8nWKU9mEy23uQSumkKAmZpg1CCGYnloZGeU0ma8uw5zsTiWyP8wB7M9Ezae4mjopvJ2j1lptKgRsjtRE8kM7W_GM/s200/mm51.jpg" border="0" /></a>whispering Mauritania. From 2000 UTC it was time for the Australian regionals and I had never copied Katherine, Alice Spring so clear. Next it was time for the PNG’s and 3905 kHz came in with the Papua whispers . I dozed off by 2200 UTC hrs but Alokesh who had completed a short nap took up scanning from 2200 UTC and found Radio Nikkei and some Indonesians.</span></p><p align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;"><strong>Second Day</strong></span></p><p align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;">Next day at break fast we took stock of our catch. A remaining multiband dipole cut for the 31 and 19 mb was put up for the east west lobe directions. While strolling in the beach and through the photo sessions we chatted away DX. Alokesh and Swopan were the recent entrants and briefed the veterans SG, TRB and Babul Gupta about the recent happenings and the latest on band updates. On our second day we drew a blank with Solomon Island but we were surprised to receive Laos on mw which was overriding AIR Dibrugarh. That evening we had an excellent Africa opening when all of the radio activity in Ethiopia <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgf80-hJuf5YvyZUmXic8d2jjHGXv5yn34CebrtcWuvZGXL-YeFYO28wlBMWjszHlIaOC4ryJmokjxNhi-RjdrBFxLUjGOLplyVxb7ul6QWqDsBKbdUe05m9XfQXjfaZEKm2dBdxKml-qs/s1600-h/mm48.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300711259228453810" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 114px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgf80-hJuf5YvyZUmXic8d2jjHGXv5yn34CebrtcWuvZGXL-YeFYO28wlBMWjszHlIaOC4ryJmokjxNhi-RjdrBFxLUjGOLplyVxb7ul6QWqDsBKbdUe05m9XfQXjfaZEKm2dBdxKml-qs/s200/mm48.jpg" border="0" /></a>and Eriteria was logged. Radio Sana on both the frequencies was steady. I was most thrilled with the Clear Sudan ID on 7200 kHz “Idhat’l Jumariyah al Sudan” coming around at 1730 UTC. Djibouti 4780 which was missing on the first day was there loud and Sudipto Ghose tried to catch a Mauritanian ID without luck because their Afro number went on non stop for twenty minutes ! We had a few breathless moments when both the hotel generators began to cough and falter. I was carrying fully charged car batteries but had never tried them out. Our worries were cleared when the genset picked up. Through out the night we enjoyed louder and clearer signals of those hard to get<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZgpuUz4DJbDT8KfzeEsARb2nduxWtmwo_30AvnscwoSbStE_SRFqrRHiFEa7sJQVLwy_cQ6Ut8ogNBRKe7vIZhGnJ5dnPFDp62o0dLpdUeaaDPA8a89D6Lp8EgEqvOnTil72A7Tt2oRc/s1600-h/mm47.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300723233293193810" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 262px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 125px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZgpuUz4DJbDT8KfzeEsARb2nduxWtmwo_30AvnscwoSbStE_SRFqrRHiFEa7sJQVLwy_cQ6Ut8ogNBRKe7vIZhGnJ5dnPFDp62o0dLpdUeaaDPA8a89D6Lp8EgEqvOnTil72A7Tt2oRc/s320/mm47.jpg" border="0" /></a> exotic stations. Why was I overjoyed ? The erratic prolonged sunspot low had dwarfed the International Broadcasters and back home it was so difficult to receive BBC, VOA and DW in the target frequencies.
